Library Update * Virtual Meetings * MeWe.com
Are you ready for some genealogy goodness? Our libraries are slowly reopening with very limited access. It will still be a while before we will be able to meet there again. Fortunately we now have a very useful alternative. The MeWe social network is making it possible for us to get together without leaving home. With MeWe, our members can visit our society groups anytime from just about anywhere.
We chose the MeWe network because unlike other social networks, MeWe protects its members’ privacy. MeWe offers both an online platform at https://mewe.com and mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. These mobile apps are free and let us take advantage of MeWe’s voice and video features.
Our society’s Member Network Group is serving as our virtual meeting place. It is where SAGS members can view presentations, chat with members, share tips and keep up with the latest deals. This month we are offering Diana Elder’s presentation from RootsTech on Research Plans, Source Citations & Research Logs. You can watch the presentation at any time via your mobile device. After the presentation use the group chat feature to discuss the ideas and resources mentioned in the presentation.
We know that MeWe is new to most of our members. We chose it over the other social networks because MeWe protects the privacy of its users. It also has some very impressive features like text, voice and video chatting.
Getting started is easy. Send your web browser to https://mewe.com and you will find the screen you see here. Fill in the boxes to create your account then check the boxes after reading MeWe’s policies and terms of service. Once that is done, click/tap the Get Started button and you are now a MeWe member.
Take some time to look around. Click the link below to download a copy of the Beginners Guide. There is also a handy MeWe FAQs document that is quite helpful.
Our Members Network group is our online community center. It was created to give us an opportunity to stay connected with members between meetings. Now it is our online home, meeting center, news center and more. The Member Network group is a private group just for our members. Once you have logged into MeWe, looked around and gotten settled, contact Denise Olson to add you to the group. How do you do that? Use the search box just to the right of the MeWe logo at the top of the screen. Choose Search Members then type in Denise Olson. She will receive a notification that someone is trying to reach her.
If you need help getting settled in MeWe, contact Denise at MeWe or by email at sags.publications@yahoo.com.
It may take a while to get all our members settled in on MeWe but you will soon discover this social network is full of genealogical goodness – and is always accessible. No it doesn’t replace getting together for meetings at the library but it gives us another way to help each other and share our findings with our members.
