Cyndi’s List – Cyndi’s List has been a trusted genealogy research site for more than 20 years. Cyndi’s List is free for everyone to use and it is meant to be your starting point when researching online.

The Family History Guide - The Family History Guide is a free learning, research, and activity center for family history. It has resources for beginning researchers and for more experienced researchers.

Internet Archive – a non-profit library with millions of free books, movies, software, music and more from around the world.

Library of Congress has a huge collection of maps, books and photographs.

National Archives. Learn how you can use the resources at the National Archives to explore your family’s ancestry.

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) has a large collection of digitized family Bibles, Civil War records and photographs.

New York Public Library has an impressive collection of private family papers and photographs.

The Commons at Flickr provides free access to photographs from from a growing number of archives worldwide.

Florida GenWeb – provides state-wide research resources as well as a directory to Florida GenWeb county sites.

Guild of One Name Studies – provides information on surname project studies. Use it to connect with others researching your surnames.

Immigration and Vital Records

Ellis Island offers passenger list searches along with immigration information.

Castle Garden preceded Ellis Island for immigrants to America.

Free BMD – offers free access to transcriptions the civil registration index of birth, marriage and death records in England and Wales.

Slave Societies Digital Archive include baptism, marriage and burial records from the 16th century into the 19th century. It is hosted at Vanderbilt University.

David Rumsey’s Historical Maps – collection includes maps from around the world.

Newberry Atlas of Historical County Boundaries is a great resource for exploring changing county boundaries in all 50 states.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps at the Library of Congress are detailed maps of city neighborhoods that represents each build structure in those districts.

USGS Historical Topographic Maps covers the entire USA with all editions going back in time.
Specialized Research
Kimberly Powell as put together an amazing collection of Genealogy Online resources. These include family history databases, indexes and digitized records collections. Many of them are free.
