Faded Echoes of the Civil War. Correlating Evidence of Identity & Kinship.

Amy Giroux will join us to discuss “Faded Echoes of the Civil War. Correlating Evidence of Identity & Kinship". This presentation will not be recorded or available on Zoom.

The presentation recounts the research involved in identifying New England and Mid-West Union soldiers whose burials in St. Augustine, Florida, were lost to time. The research begins with an 1865 stereogram photograph housed at the Library of Congress. Attendees will learn methods of researching record groups for men whose names were not known. This involves working within locality related sources to identify potential men, and then verifying them through other documentation. A case study illustrates the methods and highlights some of the documentation used to solve this research problem and to connect these men to their families.
Amy Larner Giroux, PhD, CG, CGL, is co-author of the Florida edition of the NGS Research in the States series and has published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society Record, The Genealogist (American Society of Genealogists), and Florida Studies. Her research interests include New York, New England, Florida, military cemeteries, burial iconography, and ethnic studies. She has lectured nationally and has taught at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research.

As well as dealing with visualizations of Irish sources, the talk also provides a broad overview of the most relevant records for Irish research.
