Merry Christmas from the St. Augustine Genealogical Society! This is the last issue of Research Notes for 2017. It’s been a great year for our society and we are working hard to make the new year even better.
Here’s a little Christmas tip you might find quite handy. If you have a smart phone or tablet and a library card, you have free access to a growing number of e-books – including a number of genealogy books. The St. Johns County Public Library uses the Overdrive service to provide the books and manage the browsing, checkout and checkin functions. You will need to install Overdrive’s free Libby app (available for iPhone, iPad, Android phones, Windows phones and Android tablets) from your app store. Once installed, you’ll be asked to enter your library card number. That’s it! You’re connected. You aren’t stuck with just one library either. If you have accounts at other libraries using the Overdrive service, you can add those account numbers too.
Use the Libby app to browse the library’s catalog of available e-books. When you find something you want to read, checking it out is as easy as tapping the Borrow button. Sometimes the book you want may already be checked out. If that happens, you can place a hold on it and Libby will notify you when it’s available. It’s not just about reading either. There are also audiobooks and you can listen to them through the Libby app.
By the way . . . SJCPL has the audio edition of Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans. Santa brought me a print copy and it is fascinating.
